'Use trial and improvement to find approximate solutions to more complex functions' worksheet

Key stage:  KS 4

Year:  GCSE

Curriculum topic:   Algebra

Curriculum subtopic:   Argue Mathematically to Show Algebraic Expressions are Equivalent

Difficulty level:

Worksheet Overview

This worksheet is about finding approximate solutions to more complex functions using trial and improvement.

Example

Use trial and improvement to find an approximate solution to:

x3 + 5x = 73

Give the answer to 1 d.p. Start with x = 3

Solution x x3 + 5x Comment
  3 33 + 5×3 = 42 too small
  4 43 + 5×4 = 84 too big
  3.5 3.53 + 5×3.5 = 60.375 too small
  3.7 3.73 + 5×3.7 = 69.153 too small
  3.8 3.83 + 5×3.8 = 73.872 too big
  3.75 3.753 + 5×3.75 = 71.484 too small

The solution is between x = 3.75 and x = 3.8.

So x = 3.8 (to 1 d.p.)
